My mom requested a red velvet cake for her birthday. I’ve baked them before so I know how, but I was curious for new decorating ideas. Red velvet cakes are often decorated in a more casual even haphazard way. I wanted something pretty and refined looking. I was also concerned about decorating with cream cheese icing. So I went hunting on the internet and it wasn’t an easy task.

I found lots of yummy looking cakes but not anything with the look I wanted. Then I stumbled on The Scootabaker’s Cake Building Tips Part Deux: How to build a 3 layer cake. She shows you how to build a lovely 3 layer cake with red velvet cake and cream cheese icing. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a red velvet cake look so elegant. This will definitely be the inspiration for my mom’s cake.

    • I ordered 100 cupcakes boxes today. $47 with inserts. Sure beats spending $7 for 3 at a crafts store.
    • @splityarn I think I saw small silver and white (and pink) ones in Michaels.
    • Got a box of goodies from @bakeitpretty yesterday. There will be lollipop making this weekend!
