La Neckerchief Scarf – Free Pattern

posted December 7, 2009 in knitting, patterns [3 comments]

La L NeckerchiefI was a girl scout roller derby girl for Halloween, so it only seems right that I move on to the boy scouts next. I’m picturing a vintage Norman Rockwell type boy scout, with a big red neckerchief – not the anemic ones they wear now. This was the inspiration for La Neckerchief – a not-too-bulky easy to wear indoors-and-out type scarf. You knit it on size 7 needles using less than one skein of Paton Classic Wool, which is what I had around. Or even better use some Malabrigo Worsted which will be super soft around your neck.

The gauge isn’t super important as for the one part that has to be a certain length you are told to knit to that length (rather than a number of rows). If you want to use a bulky yarn you will probably want to do fewer increases/decreases and the opposite for thinner yarns. The pattern is after the jump

Here is the official pattern. Please let me know if you have any problems!

La Neckerchief on Ravelry

NOTES
Working the first KNOT section requires 3 needles. The 3rd needle needs to be the same size or smaller as the needles for the working section. If it is smaller make sure that you are only using the smaller needle to work OFF of and not ON TO. Double pointed needles will work fine for this.
Knitting Terms
k – knit
p – purl
* * – repeat section
k2tog – knit 2 stitches together
p2tog – purl 2 stitches together
k1f&b – knit into the front of the stitch then knit into the back of the stitch (makes 1 new stitch)

Materials
Yarn: 2/3 skein of Patons Classic Wool (approximately160yds)
Needles: Size 7 needles & another pair of 7 or slightly smaller needles (see Notes)
Gauge
17 stitches & 24 rows per 4 sq inches worked in garter stitch

Pattern
Cast on 2.
Row 1: knit (2 stitches)
Row 2: k1f&b twice (4 stitches)
Row 3: knit
Row 4: k1f&b, knit to last stitch, k1f&b
Repeat rows 3 & 4 twelve more times. You will end up with 30 stitches.
Work in garter stitch (knit all stitches) for 14 more rows.
KNOT
Transfer all stitches onto another needle starting with the side with the working yarn. Then take one of the working needles and one of the spare (same size or smaller) needles and transfer alternating stitches on to each of these 2 needles. You will have 15 stitches on each needle.
Starting with the stitches on the Size 7 needle, work in 1×1 (k1,p1) rib for 12 rows. Break yarn.
Reattach yarn to the second needle and work 1×1 rib for 12 rows.
Knit 1 stitch ealternatively from each needle until all 30 stitches are on 1 needle. You may also find it easier to redistribute stitches onto one needle before starting to knit again. From this point on use only the original (size 7) needles.
NECK
Work in garter stitch (knit every row) until this section measures 17”.
KNOT
*k2tog, p2tog* to the end (15 stitches).
Work in 1×1 rib for 10 rows.
*k1f&b* across (30 stitches)
Work 14 rows of garter stitch.

Row A: k1, ssk, knit until last 3 stitches, k2tog, k1.
Row B: knit

Repeat Rows A&B until 2 stitches remain.
Bind off.

Finishing

Sew in ends.

@Pamela Bellairs – In the Copyright and Pattern Use section above I outlined what you can and can’t do with my patterns. It’s fine to make them as gifts to give to friends or to a charity, however I do state that you can’t sell items you made from this pattern. I will make an exception since it’s for charity, but in the future you might want to check with patterns authors before you get started as they may not all permit this.

I’m glad you like it though!
